Doing a Great 715
A practical course for general practice nurses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health checks, from a respectful invitation to follow-up that actually happens.
Who it is for
Registered and enrolled nurses in Australian general practice who contribute to health checks under MBS item 715, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners and health workers working with a nurse and GP team. No previous 715 experience is assumed; billing detail is brief and sits in collapsed boxes.
By the end you can
- Invite and prepare: record Indigenous status the right way, check eligibility through Medicare, book the nurse and GP time together, and invite without assuming.
- Assess and hand over: use the five age-band checklists (birth–5, 5–12, 12–24, 25–49, 50+), know what to cover first when time is short, and hand over in under a minute.
- Agree and follow through: write a plan with an owner and date for every action, deliver the written report safely, close the loop on results and referrals, and finish the after-check jobs.
Course at a glance
- A start lesson, 11 modules and a final practice lesson. Allow about 90 minutes in total, including the assessment; actual study time varies.
- Final assessment: 22 scenario questions, pass mark 80% (at least 18 correct), no time limit and unlimited attempts. Complete all lessons and pass the assessment to receive your certificate of completion.
What is included
Practice questions in every module, model scripts, worked scenarios across all ages, a “when time is short” guide, record-repair exercises, a printable desk tool and reflection sheet, links to current sources, the final assessment and a certificate. The people and practice in this course are made up.
Prerequisites
Current nursing registration, or an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioner or health worker role with a nurse and GP team. We recommend cultural safety training alongside this course, ideally delivered by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation.
Professional development and sources
Nurses may record their actual learning time as self-directed CPD under the NMBA continuing professional development standard where the learning is relevant to their practice. This is professional development, not accredited CPD; it does not extend scope of practice or replace supervision or the GP’s responsibility for the health check and any Medicare claim, and it is not endorsed by RACGP, NACCHO or the NMBA.
Content was written from the MBS (item 715 and note AN.0.43, as at September 2026), the National Guide (4th edition), the RACGP/NACCHO templates, the Australian Immunisation Handbook and the National Immunisation Program. Use the current templates and MBS requirements for the date of service.
