Already completed this training? Quick refresher

A quick reminder for experienced staff. Revisit only what you need.

  • Clarify the request and medication supply; urgency and clinical decisions belong to the clinician.
  • Reception does not alter prescriptions, certificate dates, clinical opinions or consent scope.
  • Check the authorised recipient, fee arrangement and accepted next action before promising delivery.

Open the lessons and tools. Use current local procedures and sources.

This optional refresher does not record a new completion. Certificates require the full course and its assessments.

Who this is for

Receptionists, senior receptionists and practice managers in Australian general practice. Bring basic familiarity with the front desk. The people and practice in this course are made up.

Learning time: allow about 50 minutes, including practice and assessment.

Foundation or focused practice?

Receptionist foundations gives new starters a broad introduction to front-desk work. This focused course is for staff who regularly handle scripts, certificates and forms and want more practice with those requests.

Bring basic front-desk familiarity; purchasing the foundation course is not required. Choose this course for the tasks you actually handle, alongside local procedures and supervision.

What you will practise

  • The exact words for the six commonest desk requests: a certificate, a new script, an expired referral, a Centrelink letter, a lawyer wanting records, a licence form.
  • Logging a repeat request the doctor can act on, with a stated turnaround, and knowing which requests can’t wait.
  • What reception never promises for monitored medicines under real-time prescription monitoring.
  • Routing a lost original or repeat eScript token without creating a duplicate prescription, and checking whose number or email is really in the file.
  • Certificates: the clinician decides what assessment and evidence are needed; truthful dates, corrections and employer enquiries.
  • Centrelink, NDIS, insurer and driver-medical requests: which form, who decides, what it costs.
  • Records and report requests from patients, insurers, solicitors and courts: what to capture, what you can promise, who decides, what a signed authority does and doesn’t cover, and why a court order goes to a doctor first.
  • Quoting a fee from the practice’s fee list and releasing a document safely.

Eight practical lessons

  1. The promise you can safely make
  2. Repeat prescriptions: collect, prioritise and close the loop
  3. eScripts: a lost token is not automatically a new prescription
  4. Sick certificates: dates, corrections and confidentiality
  5. Centrelink and NDIS: identify the actual evidence request
  6. Insurance and driving medicals: purpose changes the pathway
  7. Fees, reports and solicitors’ requests
  8. Put it together: an accurate request, a safe release

Learn by making decisions

Each lesson gives you the rule or a sensible default your practice can change, a short case with answer-and-reveal feedback, the words to say, and a quick recall check. A six-page workbook holds the two practice tools; the request record is also in the final lesson as text.

Assessment and completion

Complete all eight lessons, then pass the 7-question knowledge assessment (80%) and the five-question safety assessment (100%). There is no time limit; read the explanations and retry if needed. Completion gives a certificate of completion. This is professional development, not accredited CPD, and it does not give anyone prescribing or certifying authority.

Use Mark Complete when you finish a lesson and return through My Courses. Optional feedback appears after completion and can be skipped.
